The Geographical Extremes Of The United Kingdom


  
The United Kingdom is an archipelago (also known as an island group or island chain) made up of thousands of islands, of which only one hundred and thirty eight are inhabited.  
These islands include the sovereign states of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and the British Crown Dependency of the Isle of Man.  The archipelago’s ten largest islands are: 
Great Britain at 209,331 square kilometers.
Ireland at 81,638 square kilometers.
Lewis & Harris at 2,179 square kilometers.
Skye at 1,656 square kilometers.
Mainland, Shetland at 969 square kilometers. 
Mull at 875 square kilometers.
Anglesey at 714 square kilometers.
Islay at 620 square kilometers.
Isle of Man at 572 square kilometers.
Mainland, Orkney at 523 square kilometers. 


The United Kingdom's extreme points of the compass are;
Most northerly position is Out Stack, in the Shetland Islands.
Most southerly position is Les Minquieres, on Jersey.
Most easterly position is Lowestoft Ness in Suffolk, England.
Most westerly position is Soay on St Kilda in Scotland. 


The United Kingdom's entire coastline is 11,072.76 miles long.  

It's furthest point from the sea is situated at Coton In The Elms in Derbyshire, England. 

It's highest point above sea level is Ben Nevis in Scotland at 4,409 ft high. 

It's lowest point is located at Holme Fen in Cambridgeshire, England, at nine feet below sea level. 

The United Kingdom’s deepest cave is Ogof Ffynnon Ddu located in Wales, at 1,010 feet deep. 

The United Kingdom's longest river is the River Severn, which flows for 220 miles from Plynlimon in Wales through to sand Point in Somerset, England. 

The United Kingdom's largest natural lake is Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland with a surface area of 153 square miles and Scotland's Loch Lomand the largest natural lake in Great Britain with a surface area of 27.45 square miles.  

The United Kingdom's highest waterfall is Eas a' Chual Aluinn in Scotland with a drop of 685 feet.   



UK GEO - POLITICAL EXTREMES 

The United Kingdom's four countries of England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland are all sub divided into counties. 

England consists of 38 counties and covers an area of 50,331 square miles. 

Scotland consists of 26 counties and covers an area of 30,394 square miles. 

Wales consists of 22 counties and covers an area of 8,022 square miles. 

Northern Ireland consists of 7 counties and covers an area of 5,856 square miles.  
  
The U.K's largest county is North Yorkshire in England which covers an area of 3,341 square miles. 

The U.K's smallest county is that of Clackmannanshire in Scotland which covers an area of just 61 square miles. 

The U.K's largest city is London in England, which is 607 square miles in area and has a population of 7.8 million people. 

The U.K's smallest city is St David's in Wales with a population of just 1,800 people. 



UK INFRASTRUCTURE EXTREMES
The United Kingdom consists of 10,261 of railway lines, 2,173 miles of motorways, 2,000 miles of rivers and 3,000 miles of canals. 

The U.K is home to 471 airports, that number includes commercial, military and private, the largest of which is London Heathrow in England. 
  
The U.K's busiest container port is situated in Felixstowe in Suffolk, England. 

The U.K's longest motorway is the M6, which was opened in 1958, which runs for 232.2 miles from Catthorpe in Leicestershire, England to Gretna in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. 

The longest canal is the Leeds / Liverpool Canal, which was opened in 1816, which is 127 miles long and is served by 91 locks. 

The U.K's tallest lighthouse is the Bishop's Rock Lighthouse, situated on the Isles Of Scilly,  at 167 feet tall. 

The U.K's  longest pier is situated at Southend - on – Sea in Essex, England, at 7,080 feet long. 

The U.K's longest promenade is situated at New Brighton on the Wirral Peninsular in England, at 2 miles long.  

The U.K's longest high street is Streatham High Road, located in the south London borough of Lambeth, at 1.8 miles long. 

The U.K's largest man made lake / reservoir is situated in England's smallest county of Rutland and measures 4.86 square miles. 

The U.K's tallest building is the Shard in London, England which measures 1,016 feet high. 

The United Kingdom's largest national park is the Cairngorms National Park, located in Scotland, which covers an area of 1,748 square miles.
