The British armed forces, which are officially known as the Armed Forces of the Crown or Her Majesties Armed Forces, consist of land, air and naval services.
The commander in chief of the forces is the monarch with de-facto authority given to the presiding Prime Minister, although the British Army is governed solely by the British parliament and not the monarch, a result of the 1689 Bill of Rights.
The British armed forces are made up of both professional and volunteer personnel as well as regular reservists.
